Inside Café Georgetown — the space Emel Bayrak built for conversation on N Street NW Georgetown DC

She covered the White House. Then she built a room where everyone could feel at home.

Emel Bayrak spent years as a journalist — including time covering the White House as Washington's first female Turkish correspondent. She moved to Georgetown in 2004 and spent years looking for a particular kind of place: somewhere quiet enough to write, social enough to feel alive, elegant enough to matter. She couldn't find it.

In October 2018, she opened Café Georgetown on a residential block of N Street NW. No franchise, no co-working laptops, no background-noise playlist. Just a La Marzocco machine, La Colombe coffee, Turkish pastries, and a room designed for conversation between people who want to be somewhere that feels like somewhere.

I was looking for a place to write, to meet people, to feel like I was somewhere. I couldn't find it. So I built it.

Emel Bayrak, Founder

No laptops. No Zoom calls. Just coffee and conversation.

Espresso is liquid gold. The atmosphere is very chill and welcoming — best spot in Georgetown for a proper coffee.

They also do amazing latte art. The family is so kind — it feels like a neighborhood institution, not just a café.
